Dwayne Johnson to Rock ’80s Video Game in ‘Rampage’ Adaptation
After facing down a massive earthquake in “San Andreas,” Dwayne Johnson is ready to take on gigantic monsters in an adaptation of the 1980s arcade game “Rampage.”
According to Deadline, the actor will reunite with “San Andreas” studio New Line and producer Beau Flynn on the film, which will be written by Ryan Engle (“Non-Stop”). The search is on for a director.
Released in 1986 by Bally Midway, “Rampage” allowed players to control three giant monsters — a gorilla, a lizard and a werewolf, all created from mutated humans — as they destroyed buildings and ate people in cities across North America.
Although script details are being kept under wraps, it’s not difficult to imagine “Rampage” as New Line’s fairly straightforward answer to “Godzilla” and “Pacific Rim.”
“Rampage” is targeted to being production next summer.
